"Footwear is one of the clothing accessories and as such today it is an indispensable part of the human outfit. Shoe functions and forms follow and complement the features of the wearing apparel. The value of a pair of shoes depends not only on its functionality (purpose, comfort, aesthetics, material composition, durability etc.) but it is relative to time, social status, economic conditions and individual taste. Shoes are designed to protect the feet during their primary functions of mobility and support. Over the past century, fashion has frequently interfered with the original purposes of protection from injury and exposure. Footwear is sometimes the cause of, and frequently a contributor to, musculosketal disorders.

This book contains seven chapters. Chapter 1 presents an overview of fundamental of footwear anatomy. The foot is an anatomical structure found in many vertebrates. It is the terminal portion of a limb which bears weight and allows locomotion. Foot function has been in conflict with fashion for many years. Thousands of different styles and types of footwear exist but they all fall into categories that are based on their materials and construction. Chapter 2 focuses on foot biomechanics and gait. The biomechanics of the foot and ankle are important to the normal function of the lower extremity. The foot is the terminal joint in the lower kinetic chain that opposes external resistance. Proper arthrokinematic movement within the foot and ankle influences the ability of the lower limb to attenuate the forces of weight bearing. A gait is a pattern of limb movements made during locomotion. Human gaits are the various ways in which a human can move, either naturally or as a result of specialized training. Chapter 3 sheds light on foot models and measurements. It explains the foot anthropometric measurements, foot variations and classifications of foot types. Foot variations using size-related anthropometric measurements, probably due to easy-acquisition and direct application of this kind of data to the design of footwear and its sizing system. Chapter 4 focuses on foot sketch and footwear design. It also explains the anatomy of the human foot, elements of foot sketching, materials and tools, styles of foot sketch, how to draw shoes. Chapter 5 presents design and manufacturing of shoes lasts. The shoe last is the starting point of every shoe design and has been called “the heart of the shoe.” The last is the center of the entire shoemaking process, in which the shoemaker starts with the last and then builds the shoe out from there. Chapter 6 sheds light on the footwear business and advertising. In this chapter the factors contributing towards the rise of the footwear industry, including global market shares, advertising budgets and global consumption, are explored. Finally, chapter 7 presents footwear for cold weather conditions. You will understand the feet in cold environments. Moreover, feet and footwear-related injuries in cold environments are also covered. A focus on design requirements of footwear for cold environments is given. Finally, footwear insulation and moisture management in footwear is given. "
